I understand the love surrounding the “Expectant Parent” scene because I have the same love for it too. Amidst all the horror and terror of Gilead, June and Nick are excited to be parents of their child, in those few moments up the stairs, nothing else matters but their family. It’s sweet and heartbreaking and layered and just gets me in my Nick and June feels, I get that.
But another moment that I think was telling was how June accepts and seeks comfort from Nick after Hannah is taken away.
I think that’s important because in 2x09 there was this re-realization on Nick’s part that June has a husband and a daughter and a life unrelated to him, he’s confronted with that truth and then reminds June of that truth in the ending scene. I bring this up because I half-expected Nick to either give June her space to grieve after Hannah is taken away from her again or I half-expected him to touch her only for June to move away because she’s inconsolable, both of which would’ve been options that made sense and would’ve been more than fair but that’s not what happened. Instead she held onto him, let him hold onto her, they embraced and it was natural and it was intimate.
And I’m not trying to discount the scene being about Hannah and I’m not trying to discount June’s love for Luke (even though I personally don’t think the show did a very good job in establishing it) but I don’t think that Nick is an outlier, not after that scene.
